The library media program fosters a love of reading that renders a positive attitude towards lifelong learning.
Students in PK2 through fifth grade participate in weekly library classes to learn how to use the library and find information. Library story time is also part of the media program where students practice listening and comprehension skills while developing literacy and their imaginations. Students learn efficient information literacy skills including evaluation and effective use of resources to prepare for an increasingly global community.
The goal of the library curriculum is to enable students to collaborate with each other in asking wonder questions, finding high-quality information, developing products and reflecting on their learning. Students will develop lifelong learning skills to become effective users of information while developing an appreciation for literature. Students will develop an understanding that the library is a lifetime resource for personal, educational and recreational materials. Students will cultivate an appreciation for a variety of cultures through exposure to diverse literary formats and genres.
Library and information skills are taught to students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Every attempt is made to integrate the teaching of these skills to lessons being taught in the classroom and in collaboration with classroom projects. The objectives focus on students developing skills needed to access, evaluate, and interpret information for a variety of purposes and use a variety of critical thinking skills to determine the information needed.
